Set in Los Angeles in the late 1940's, the story is told through the eyes of Bucky Bleichert an LAPD officer and former boxer. Elizabeth Short, The Black Dahlia, a young Hollywood hopeful, had been brutally murdered. Her murder sparked one of the greatest manhunts in California history. In this fictionalized treatment of a real case, Bucky Bleichert and Lee Blanchard, both L.A. cops obsessed with the Black Dahlia, journey through the seamy underside of Hollywood to the core of the dead girl’s twisted life. The Black Dahlia of the title is not the main story, so the title is misleading. I have other criticisms as well, such as Ellroy's obvious dislike for law enforcement which permeates the book. I bought two Ellroy books because I liked the film made from L.A. Confidential and wanted to see whether he is an author whose books I would like to read more of.
