The trailhead is found at the Walton Ranger Station near Essex, MT off Highway 2. This trail is a popular early season trail and snowshoe in the winter due to its south facing slope and easy trail access. Visitors will need to take a short section of the South Boundary Trail to access this trail, which begins the climb to Scalplock Mountain.
Someone who considers themselves out of shape will probably not enjoy this climb. At 1.1 miles, you will come to the junction for the Ole Creek trail, stay left at this point. The trail will come to a junction with the Scalplock Lookout trail at 1.5 miles, turn right. The trail climbs rather steeply up the Scalplock Mountain.
